Business Network Analysis

Doing a Business Network Analysis

How is a Business Network Analysis Done?

The broad generic process is as follows.

Generic business network analysis process

Information Flow Maps

What is an Information Flow Map?

An information flow map uses data to provide management with empirical information on the real structure and relationships in an organisation, and the flow of information in that organisation. The data shows whether a relationship between two or more nodes exists, and the value of that relationship. It can be weighted or have attributes associated with it, and show the direction of the flow. The results are then displayed graphically or in tabular format.

Project Interface Maps

What is a Project Interface Map?

Project interface maps provide a powerful way to understand how work is actually done, both internally and externally to the project, as well as how one project is related to another. A project interface map uses data to provide management with empirical information on the real structure and relationships of project teams, between project teams and between projects themselves. The data shows whether a relationship between two or more nodes exists, and the value of that relationship. The data can be weighted or have attributes associated with it. The results are then displayed graphically or in tabular format.

Organisational Interface Maps

What is an Organisational Interface Map?

An organisational interface map reveals the informal and the formal networks using the business unit or organisation as the unit of analysis. It allows them to be evaluated, measured and supported. Organisational interface maps provide a powerful way to understand how work is actually done, both internally and externally to the organisational.

Policy Relationship Maps

What is a Policy Relationship Map?

A policy relationship map uses the business network analysis methodology to elicit the capacity of an organisation to effectively engage in its activities. It provides the ability to examine quantitatively, qualitatively, and graphically macro linkages between nodes, where nodes are documents, policies or even business functions. A connection between two or more nodes means there is some sort of relationship and information should be consistent between them.

Social Capital Maps

What is a Social Capital Map?

A social capital map uses business network analysis techniques to elicit the capacity of an organisation to effectively engage in its activities. It provides the ability to examine quantitatively, qualitatively, and graphically the linkages between nodes, where nodes are individuals. A connection between two or more nodes means there is some sort of relationship and information is passed between them. Social capital maps provide a powerful way to understand how work is actually done in an organisation.

Collaboration Maps

What Is A Collaboration Map?

Collaboration maps reveal the informal and the formal networks of an organisation typically using the individual or project team as the unit of analysis. A collaboration map provides management with empirical information on the real structure and relationships between individuals and teams. The data shows whether a relationship between two or more nodes exists, and the value of that relationship. It can be weighted or have attributes associated with it. The results are then displayed graphically or in tabular format.

Business Network Analysis

Business network analysis is a diagnostic methodology that elicits the capacity of an organisation to effectively engage in its activities. It provides the ability to examine quantitatively, qualitatively, and graphically macro and micro linkages between nodes, where nodes are individuals, projects, project teams, business units, entire organisations, or even business functions, policies or documents. A connection between two or more nodes means there is some sort of relationship and information is, or should be, passed between them.

Understanding the Complexity of Program Management - AIM

Adobe pdf file Understanding the Complexity of Program Management - AIM. A presentation on the Project Knowledge Model (PKM) and Business Network Analysis (BNA) and its applicability to a large Program of Projects. The presentation was given by Pat Byrne and Graham Durant-Law to the Canberra Chapter of the Australian Institute of Management (AIM).

Understanding the Complexity of Program Management - PMI

Adobe pdf file Understanding the Complexity of Program Management . A presentation in February 2008 by Patrick Byrne and Graham Durant-Law to the Melbourne Chapter of the Project Management Institute . Just over 150 project and program managers attended the session. This was the first time we exposed our Project Knowledge Model and Business Network Analysis techniques to a public forum of our peers.
